Andrew is our little blessing! After 6 years of trying to get pregnant and losing a baby along the way (due to miscarriage), we were blessed with Andrew in October of 2006. We knew really early on that he had some physical issues (severely tongue tied @ birth, significant GI issues right away, torticolis of the neck), but did not realize all of what was going on for some time.
He is a very interesting little one as he is advanced in some areas (extremely intelligent), but has some gross motor and speech delays and chronic GI (gastrointestinal) issues. He has been to far too many doctors trying to figure out all that is going on, and has been in various therapies since 4 months of age. We went to doctor after doctor after doctor, but nobody could really say what was “the issue / issues” for sure. One month before Andrew’s 4th birthday, in Sept of 2010, Andrew was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy.
As devastating as it was to hear that, I believe after lots of research that it is true. Obviously, the CP is considered mild in his case or we would have been told this long before he was 4 years old, but it still leaves Andrew with lots of struggles to overcome. We have found some innovative medical treatments that are helping Andrew IMPROVE (praise God!), but they are not covered by insurance & are currently costing us around $ 750 per MONTH out of pocket on a school teacher’s modest salary (down from $800 / month for over a year, better at least). It is difficult financially, to say the least.
We also took Andrew to California & Mexico this past summer to get umbilical cord stem cell and hyperbaric oxygen treatments done. These treatments have produced GREAT IMPROVEMENTS in Andrew’s functioning! The treatments cost MANY thousands of dollars though (and again, insurance will not pay). We intend to do it all again this summer (in 2012 ~ God willing & we can raise enough money) and we pray for even greater improvements for Andrew!
