Viviana CarrerasViviana was born on January 24, 2008 and unable to breathe on her own. She spent six weeks on a ventilator in the NICU. She came home at six weeks old with no ventilator support. She spent most of her first couple year of life hospitalized for failure to thrive and frequent respiratory infections.

In 2010, Viviana was diagnosed with an unspecified form of congenital Myasthenia syndrome, an inherited neuromuscular disorder caused by defects of several types at the neuromuscular junction. Her prognosis is unknown.

In 2011, Viviana spent a total of three months in the PICU at Cardon Children’s for respiratory failure. She has since come home with a 24-hour ventilator support.

Viviana’s dad works full time as a middle school English teacher, and her mom works as a registrar for an online college. Viviana’s care requires her mom to miss a significant amount of work, thus creating a financial hardship for the Carreras family that makes it difficult to pay bills and afford basic necessities.
